Image-to-depth relief mesh generation for Rhino 8

Turn images into printable, projectable Rhino reliefs.

I2D is now completely free — the full plugin with no limitations. Convert photos, artwork, and pre-made depth maps into Rhino mesh reliefs with live previews, bas-relief shaping, depth-map export, and projection onto surfaces or meshes.

Built for relief work

From flat heightfields to surface-aware reliefs.

I2D gives Rhino users a direct path from image input to editable mesh output without leaving the modeling environment.

01

Generate relief meshes

Create flat heightfield meshes from photos, artwork, logos, or grayscale height maps.

02

Shape photo depth

Use bas-relief shaping, gamma, edge detail, Laplace detail, and depth curves to tune form and surface texture.

03

Project to surfaces

Map reliefs onto selected surfaces, polysurface faces, or meshes with controls for inset, rotation, fit, and normal direction.

04

Prepare solid output

Add a solid bottom, trim uniform borders, isolate subjects, and reduce mesh density for practical fabrication.

Flat relief mesh with 100 by 100 model unit dimensions
Flat relief scaled in Rhino model units.
Relief mesh generated with subject-only mesh disabled
Full rectangular relief output.
Relief mesh generated with subject-only mesh enabled
Subject-only mesh output without background faces.

Quick start

Open the panel, choose an image, tune, and build.

The main command is I2DOpenPanel. Load an image, watch the depth preview, then add a flat mesh or project the result to a Rhino target.

1

Browse

Choose a normal image or mark it as a pre-made depth / height map.

2

Preview

Adjust luminance, relief shaping, edge detail, depth direction, and target scale.

3

Build

Add a flat relief mesh or project the mesh onto selected Rhino geometry.

Project to surface

Reliefs that follow your Rhino forms.

Fill a target area, preserve or stretch aspect ratio, flip axes, rotate the layout, and choose the surface normal that controls relief direction.

Project inset / size

Control how much of the selected surface area is filled. Suggested start: 0.94.

Projected height scale

Scale relief height after projection while keeping the source depth work intact.

Fit and orientation

Preserve aspect, fill the target, rotate in 90-degree steps, or mirror in X and Y.

Projection controls let the same relief follow curved and spherical Rhino geometry.

Starting points

Presets for common relief jobs.

Use these values as a fast baseline, then refine the depth preview for your source image and model units.

General Photo Relief

  • Bas-relief shaping on
  • Gamma 2.20
  • Edge 0.30 and detail 0.10
  • Target depth 5.0
  • High 1024 quality

Coin, Logo, or Line Art

  • Bas-relief shaping off
  • Edge 0.40 to 0.70
  • Subject-only mesh on
  • Trim border on

Pre-made Depth Map

  • Depth / height map mode on
  • Contrast 1.00
  • Brightness 0.00
  • Depth curve 1.00

Final High Detail

  • High or Ultra output quality
  • Adaptive mesh reduction on
  • Live mesh off unless needed
  • Use Cancel during long builds

Choose the right output quality.

Start fast while tuning, then increase resolution for final meshes.

Triangles or quads

Triangles are the most robust output. Quads lower the face count but can become non-planar on detailed reliefs.

Adaptive reduction

Reduce face count after building, especially useful for High and Ultra quality meshes.
